The state’s $3.5-billion budget deficit has headlined most newspapers this session and overshadowed almost every other issue. My office has received hundreds of calls, emails, letters and messages on a variety of topics ranging from dramatic cuts to schools to the silencing of public radio and the elimination some benefits to seniors. I will personally read and listen to each and every communication and work to protect the critical and constitutionally-mandated functions of government.

Rep. Kawasaki’s Newsletter: Busy Weekend in Fairbanks

I will be in town this weekend and will host a public a public forum on Saturday to give Fairbanksans an update on the progress of the 29th Alaska Legislature. The forum will be held at the Raven Landing Center 1222 Cowles Street from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. I look forward to reconnecting with Fairbanks and spending my birthday weekend at home.

Rep. Kawasaki’s Newsletter: Cheers, Beers and Budget

The House of Representatives passed the operating budget late last night after the House Independent Democratic Coalition offered 21 amendments and the Republican leadership rejected all of them. These amendments would have restored early education, prevented teacher layoffs across the state, improved our University of Alaska system, expanded Medicaid, improved public safety and restored promises to our seniors benefit recipients.
