This week the House Finance committee will be holding public testimony on the State Operating Budget. Anchorage has its own time slot and day scheduled so if you have any concerns this will be your chance to be heard. Are you’re concerned about the projected cuts to public education ($23.3 million); cuts to the University budget (about $35 million); the exclusion of Medicaid Expansion; the closure of the Wildland Fire Academy in McGrath; or any other department cuts (or non-cuts)? In one week the legislative session will reach its halfway point of 45 days. There is still so much to do here in Juneau and I expect the pace to quicken with every day. This past week Governor Walker began the process of making good on his campaign promise to accept Medicaid expansion and help provide coverage for vulnerable Alaskans. In this edition of my e-news I want to bring your attention to a piece of legislation that I introduced today. As many of you undoubtedly know I love to view Alaska in all of its natural glory. I have traveled all over the state and I can say that no matter where you go you will find something that will make you stop and reflect. It is because of this love for Alaska that I introduced House Joint Resolution 12 to help heal the old wounds of the 1989 Exxon disaster and finally clean up our coastlines.
