Rep. Josephson’s Newsletter: Budget Close-Outs & Public Testimony
This has been a busy week full of meetings and there is much to tell you. Before I do, I want to commend the House Resource Committee Chairs on their dedication to hearing the Governor’s oil and gas credit and mining tax bills and holding sometimes two meetings a day. These are very complex issues and each hearing I feel like we learn something new about these industries and these credits. There will be an opportunity for public comment on both bills in the near future. I will be sure to keep you all informed about when that is.

NEWS: Legislation Introduced to Give LGBT Spouses and Parents Equal Rights in Alaska
Juneau – Today, Representative Andy Josephson (D-Anchorage) introduced House Bill 342, which seeks to make Alaska statutes conform to the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that recognized marriage as a right regardless of gender.

NEWS: Legislation Seeks Corporate Shareholder Approval for Spending to Influence Political Campaigns in Alaska
Juneau – Today, Representative Andy Josephson (D-Anchorage) formally introduced legislation requiring corporations in Alaska to get an affirmative vote from a majority of shareholders before spending corporate money on political campaigns or issues. Rep. Josephson confirms that House Bill 343 is in direct response to the 2010 Citizens United decision by the U.S. Supreme Court allowing corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money on elections to support or defeat candidates or issues.

Rep. Josephson’s Newsletter: With deep sadness, the Passing of a Dear Friend
My team and I are full steam ahead this session already and we are making real progress toward understanding the full breadth of Alaska’s new budget challenges. Also, I have proposed a new piece of legislation that I am excited to share with you. More important than this was some tragic news of just yesterday: amidst the whirlwind of activity this session, a dear friend and member of my caucus, Representative Max Gruenberg passed away this weekend and will be sincerely missed by all.
