Give Thanks Through Giving
Help Desperately Needed by Charities
Dear Neighbors,
I wish you many blessings this Thanksgiving holiday, and I hope the season finds you and your families well. I wanted to take this opportunity to alert you there is a desperate need for food, warm clothing, and other donations throughout Anchorage and Alaska this Thanksgiving.
The unusually cold weather this year has strained the resources of many of our nonprofit organizations as they provide assistance to needy families and individuals. Many of these organizations are critically low on supplies and your help is needed to make sure that those who are less fortunate are able to have a happy Thanksgiving. Please take a moment to learn about some of the needs that have come to my attention, and about ways you can provide assistance.
Bean’s Café is drastically short on food donations including butter, ham, eggs, stovetop dressing, cranberry sauce, cream of chicken soup, cream pies, sweet potatoes, fresh fruit, salad dressing, fruit punch, ground coffee, large paper plates, and paper cups.
Donations can be dropped off daily at Bean’s Café at 1101 east 3rd Avenue Monday-Friday 8 am- 5 pm, Saturday and Sundays 8:30 am-5 pm.
Bean’s Café serves the homeless, the mentally ill, the elderly, families in temporary crisis, and also assists local agencies in the feeding of children. To learn more about how to help, please visit their website at http://www.beanscafe.org/.
The American Red Cross of Alaska has also reported that they need help meeting unprecedented demand due in part to helping over thirty communities affected by the Bering Sea storm as well as due to providing emergency shelter to individuals affected by the widespread power outage on the Kenai Peninsula. To learn more about how you can help by volunteering or making a donation, visit the Red Cross of Alaska website at http://www.alaska.redcross.org/.
The Alaska Injured Workers Alliance needs forty turkeys, frozen or thawed, gravy packs, and pies. They are a nonprofit organization advocating for people with mental and physical disabilities and injured workers. They plan to provide those in need with a full Thanksgiving dinner including turkey, gravy, potatoes, corn, beans, and pie—and will even cook for those who require it. Please call Barbara Williams at 854-5367 and she will pick up your donation.
The Food Bank of Alaska is a major resource for many nonprofits throughout the Alaska year-round. Since 1979 they have been securing donated for nonprofit agencies to distribute to hungry Alaskans. They are in great need of frozen turkeys and nonperishable food of all sorts. Their warehouse at 2121 Spar Avenue is open to receive food donations 8 am-4 pm Mondays-Fridays. You can learn more about how to donate or volunteer at http://www.foodbankofalaska.org/viewPage.php?ID=1.
The Salvation Army is in need of pies, cool whip, and dinners rolls, and is also seeking all frozen or nonperishable donations. They will be accepting donations around the clock at the Salvation Army McKinnell House at 1712 A street. The McKinnell house is the only facility in Anchorage providing shelter for two-parent families or single parenting fathers.
Catholic Social Services operates a year round food pantry to assist the needy and is always seeking nonperishable foods and fresh fruits and vegetables. They are accepting donations Monday-Friday between 9 am and 4 pm at 3710 East 20th Avenue. For more information call 222-7355 or visit their website at http://www.cssalaska.org/.

It contains a wealth of ideas and resources to help our neighbors connect with meaningful opportunities to make a donation, advocate, or volunteer during the holidays. There is inspiration for individuals, families and youth, so that everyone finds a way to make giving back to the community part of their holiday tradition. Happy Thanksgiving, and thank you for taking the time to read this update! As always, send me an email or call my office any time at 269-0240 if I can provide you with further assistance with this or any other issue.
I'm here for you,
