Weekend Wind Advisory

Dear Neighbors,

The National Weather Service has warned that a high wind watch is now in effect from Saturday evening through late Sunday night in Anchorage. We can expect southeast winds along Turnagain Arm and the Hillside with gusts of up to 100 miles per hour. The rest of Anchorage may experience winds of 35 to 50 miles per hour with possible gusts of 65 miles per hour.

The recent windstorm that struck the city serves as a strong reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness. I hope you will take a moment to look over the following information which will help you prepare for an emergency.

September is National Preparedness Month and the Municipality of Anchorage is sponsoring events and activities to prepare Alaskans for emergency situations. You can learn more at the Emergency Management website:

One of the most important steps you can take to increase your preparedness is to have a disaster supply kit in your home. Here is a link to more information:

Building a disaster kit can also be a good way to teach your family about keeping safe and informed during extreme weather situations. Talk through your family’s specific plan and practice what to do and where to go when the power is out.
