Back to School
Dear Neighbors,
As many of you know, classes for grades 2-12 will begin on August 21 in the Anchorage School District.
I hope you will get in the habit of using extra caution in your morning driving routine and watch for children waiting for school buses along the roadsides.
School Walking Routes Mapped by the Anchorage School District
A good way for parents to learn the safest routes for children to walk to school is provided by the Municipality of Anchorage at the following link:
muni.org/Departments/works/traffic/Pages/SafeRoutesToSchools.aspx
The Anchorage School District also provides a website that has a variety of information about getting to and returning home from school safely that parents and guardians of children may wish to visit:
http://www.asdk12.org/parents/safety/.
School Crossing Safety Tips

• Cross at corners, never in the middle of the block.
• Stop, and look in all directions before crossing.
• If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic, in single file, as far away from the road as possible.
• Wear white or reflective clothing after dark.
• Wear properly-fitting safety equipment when riding a bicycle.

School Funding at Risk
Due to the recent irresponsible oil tax giveaway Alaska now faces a budget deficit of over $600 million in the coming fiscal year. We are now facing increasing cuts to all state services including education, which has already taken a huge hit which will result in fewer teachers and larger class sizes.
The situation threatens to get worse as our state treasury is drained while some of the most profitable corporations in the world make even more money from our publicly-owned resources.
The Senate Finance Subcommittee for the Department of Education and Early Development is holding hearings on August 20 and 21 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm about the education budget. You can attend in person at the Anchorage Legislative Information Office at 716 West 4th Avenue or watch the live stream at:
http://alaskalegislature.tv/
I hope you will participate in the dialogue. A proper education is a great investment in our children’s future and will ultimately yield greater economic benefits for all Alaskans.
I’m here for you, so please keep in touch on matters important to you and your family!
Warm regards,
