Special Edition Fiscal Crisis Newsletter
As you are probably aware, the Legislature has extended beyond its standard 90 day limit as lawmakers work to come to agreement on fixing Alaska’s fiscal crisis.
It is regrettable that we are in this position, but I intend to work as long as is necessary to come up with a responsible plan that is fair to regular Alaskans. So far the Majority has blocked the Governor’s attempts to fix our current oil tax system in which we pay out more in oil tax credits and subsidies than we take in from production taxes—and we continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
It is unfair to discontinue assisting our poor senior citizens, young children and other vulnerable Alaskans for a tiny fraction of the costs while paying the oil industry hundreds of millions of dollars in cash subsidies.
Until we fix the oil subsidies, any new revenues such as restructuring the permanent fund, an income tax, or other new taxes would simply result in taking money from regular Alaskans to hand over to the wealthiest corporations in the world. It doesn’t make sense to take part of the Permanent Fund Dividend from Alaskans to pay the oil industry and we shouldn’t take it from those least able to pay.
I have dedicated my most recent districtwide newsletter to providing you with the best information available about our fiscal situation and the steps that need to be taken to resolve it. If you have not yet received your copy in the mail you can read an electronic version at the following link:
There are still a lot of details and moving parts to coming up with a fiscal plan that we can be proud of and it may take a little more time to get it right. Thank you for your attention to this critical information regarding Alaska’s future prosperity and well-being.
