You Deserve the Truth!

Dear Neighbors,

In the middle of the night, shortly after 2 am in the morning yesterday, the House Resources Committee prematurely rushed out a bill intended to give away a massive share of Alaska's wealth to the oil industry.

The governor’s bill, SB21, will give billions of dollars per year to the wealthiest and most profitable corporations in the world--with no promise or guarantee of increased production or investment in Alaska.

In committee, we were divided on the issue. Instead of negotiating from a position of strength, we were negotiating against ourselves. The governor and many in the legislature argue that the oil industry should have more profits and they will spend it in Alaska if we give them more. There is no guarantee in this legislation they will spend it with us. This is a betrayal of public trust.

They are negotiating against the people of Alaska. This is wrong! As representatives of an owner state, our politicians should be negotiating on behalf of Alaskans.

Our current tax structure encourages more investment in Alaska. If profits are used to reinvest in Alaska, the industry pays less in taxes.

Hundreds of people turned up at rallies around Alaska on Thursday to protest the oil revenue giveaway.
Hundreds of people turned up at rallies around Alaska on Thursday to protest the oil revenue giveaway.

In the last days of session, I will be sending a series of informative emails detailing how the oil industry is making record profits on the North Slope, oil industry jobs and investment are at an all-time high, and that the decline rate in the pipeline has actually slowed under our current revenue structure.

I hope you will take a moment to read these messages. You deserve to know what is really going on so you can make your voice heard. We must not allow any reductions in oil taxes unless they are directly tied to greater production and more oil in the pipeline.

I’m here for you, so please keep in touch on matters important to you and your family!

Warm regards,
