Education Cuts Will Hurt Our Economy

Dear Neighbors,

This past week, I joined other colleagues in an effort to improve our education system. We worked hard to prevent the State House from moving Alaska education backward. Unfortunately, we were not successful.

The House majority offered a budget that cut out key education elements even the governor had in his budget. Several amendments, including my own, were offered that would have restored funding for preschool around the state, kept the successful Parents as Teachers initiative, increased the per-student allocation and kept base funding for job training. By gutting early education, reducing school funding and eliminating key job training, Alaska’s long-term economy is at risk.

According to Federal Reserve Bank economic analyst Rob Grunewald in a published piece entitled “Early Childhood Development: Economic Development with a High Public Return,” investments in early childhood development are some of the very best ways to increase economic development, yielding “extraordinary return, far exceeding the return on most investments, private or public.” Despite these recent setbacks, I will continue to work for a better education for our children.

Education: Make your voice heard in the Capitol
Pro-education legislators are hosting a hearing in defense of Alaska’s public schools Monday, March 25th, 1-3pm. Share your concerns and ideas on how to help Alaska’s public schools create opportunities for our children. To testify, go to the Anchorage Legislative Information Office at 716 W. 4th Ave, Suite 200.
