Fall Community Councils Dear Neighbors,
It’s that time of year: Neighborhood community councils have started meeting again! After a short summer hiatus, most neighborhood community councils start meeting again in September. Community Councils are open to all residents or property owners, and are a great way to get to know your neighbors, stay active in the development of your community, and find out about events and projects that directly impact your lives. I previously served as the Airport Heights Community Council Secretary/Treasurer and President and remain active with all of our area councils. It's been a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to continuing to work with neighbors to improve our area. Just recently I worked closely with the Mountain View Community Council to oppose the proposed neighborhood-disrupting move of the 18th Aggressor Squadron from Fairbanks to Anchorage and have been working with all councils, particularly the Airport Heights Community Council, to stay on top of the proposed northern access road (Bragaw extension) to the U-Med District. Community Councils have a very real impact on the community! I strongly urge you to participate. Examples of how community councils help inform your legislators Community councils also often weigh in on development projects through letters of support or opposition or through a formal resolution passed by the council. These items should be on the agenda each month so you can keep up on current topics. Another item of interest is liquor license applications and renewals. When these come up it is the input from the neighbors that really helps in determining whether or not the application or renewal should be approved. Neighbors know first-hand whether an establishment is having a positive or negative impact on the area.
