HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT

August 22, 2013

Hello –

I’m happy to report on progress on our GMO labeling legislation effort. We have a new webpage devoted to GMO Labeling Legislation. This page will be a place to post recent news articles and information and resources to learn more about our effort. Please bookmark this page: http://akdemocrats.org/rep_tarr/gmo/

Last month the 4th annual Food Film Festival was held and hundreds attended showings of GMO: OMG. I was proud to play a part in this year’s festival and share information about the GMO labeling legislation. The support for this legislation is fantastic! Thank you to ACE, the Alaska Food Policy Council, and Bear Tooth for hosting this important event.

Through these events, many more people have signed on in support of the GMO labeling legislation. We plan to offer more of these events advance our effort to pass GMO labeling legislation. Please watch for future announcements.

REPORT FROM NATIONAL MEETINGS
Last week I traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to participate in the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators and National Conference of State Legislatures meetings. I am very pleased to report that through these meetings and networking with other legislators I expect GMO labeling bills to be offered in at least 20 states! This is fantastic! To date, two states, Connecticut and Maine, have passed GMO labeling laws. A law in Vermont passed the House, but failed in the Senate. An initiative requiring labeling will be on the ballot in Washington this fall.

We know this momentum is necessary to achieve labeling legislation at the national level. I’ll keep you up to date and hope you can share information about these efforts with friends and family outside.

P.S. Some of you are new to this list since we began Health and the Environment newsletters last month. Please visit this link for the first edition: http://akdemocrats.org/tarr/072213_newsletter.htm

Sincerely,

signed: Geran Tarr
