Two Weeks In...
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
The past two weeks have been a whirlwind of activity. On January 15, I was sworn in on the floor and signed the Oath of Office with the lieutenant governor. Accompanying me to the signing of the Oath of Office were my two staffers, Joe Caissie and Monica Southworth. Joe has experience with economics and possesses a keen interest in resource development in Alaska. Last year he was a law clerk for Justice Christen on the Alaska Supreme Court. Monica is a life-long Alaskan, originally from Unalaska, AK. She has worked in the legislature for the past two years and I’m excited to have both of them as my legislative team. Since the beginning of session, a flurry of bills have been introduced addressing issues that Alaskans struggle with on a daily basis. I’ve introduced several bills already. Among the legislation includes a bill that would help make college accessible by reducing the cost of a college loan, a consumer protection bill that would protect children from dangerous chemicals in toys, a resolution to support our commercial fishing industry and the 70,000 jobs that it provides by rejecting approval of genetically modified salmon, and a bill that would provide a tax break to corporations for initiating business in the state of Alaska.
Neighborhood & City Events We’re going to be announcing events going on around the neighborhood, if you have an event or celebration to announce, let us know and we’ll include it in our e-newsletters. Get Involved! We NEED YOU! Are you interested in getting involved and having a say in the government? There are several levels of government where you can get involved. Serving on a board or commission is a great way to stay up-to-date on issues our community and state are facing. For more information on how to apply to a municipal board, click here, or for the openings on state-wide boards and commissions, click here.
Spread the Word! Share our newsletter! We’re just getting started with sending out legislative updates. Share our newsletter with your friends and family who might be interested. I work for you! I welcome all ideas in creating new bills, resolutions, and advocating for issues. While I’m working hard for you in Juneau, I love to hear from my neighbors. Please feel free to e-mail or call anytime. Sincerely,
