Berta’s Briefings from Rep. Gardner: Safety is on My Mind

My heart goes out to the family and friends of Samantha Koenig who was tragically abducted from a coffee stand in Midtown where she worked. I know the Anchorage Police Department, the FBI, Samantha’s family, and the Anchorage community, are doing everything they can to bring Samantha home. We are all waiting for the news that she has been rescued and is safe.

Berta’s Briefings from Rep. Gardner: Update on Cell Phones and Driving

It’s the second year of the two-year legislative session and this is the time that bills start flying or dying. Many people have contacted me to tell me how they feel about using cell phones while driving.

It is an issue about which Anchorage residents have many different opinions. Some people believe that using a cell phone while driving should be completely banned, while others believe the government should stay out of regulating personal behavior. Still, others believe that hands-free devices are one solution to permit safer use of a phone while on the road.

Berta’s Briefings from Rep. Gardner: Introduction of “PROPERTY TAX FAIRNESS ACT”

You have probably heard the commotion relating to property tax exemptions for some religious properties in Anchorage.

Property tax exemptions for religious facilities and for pastor housing have been a longstanding practice in states and municipalities throughout the nation, including in Alaska. In 2006, the definition of religious property was significantly broadened to include some residences of teachers serving at religious institutions.

As the 2012 Legislature begins to unfold, I wanted to give you a sense of my goals for this session. All of these ideas have evolved from important conversations with you, my constituents, as well as from community council discussions and what I have learned in legislative committees.

From Rep. Berta Gardner: Alaska Students Can Lift Your Heart

When the legislature is in Juneau, each Floor session is opened with a prayer. The person offering the prayer, whether one of our own members or an invited guest, customarily opens with words something like this: “With the deepest respect for the beliefs of all who are present here, I offer this prayer.”

Berta’s Briefings from Rep. Gardner: Good News for Expanded North Slope Oil Development

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

The new agreement between ConocoPhillips and the federal government will encourage new North Slope development and the sharing of facilities. This will eventually put more oil in the Pipeline.

I just wanted to let you know about an important new development that should help promote new oil production on the North Slope.

Two federal resource agencies, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), just reached an agreement in principle with ConocoPhillips regarding the company’s proposed Alpine Satellite Development Plan (CD-5) in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A).

Berta’s Briefings from Rep. Gardner: The City Has a List. Maybe You do to?

Last Friday afternoon Anchorage legislators were invited to meet with the Mayor as he rolled out Anchorage’s 2012 Legislative Program. The city’s requests touch on planning, maintenance and public safety.

The only surprise for Midtown Anchorage was an intriguing proposal to move the Transit Center from downtown to midtown Anchorage. The mayor is asking for funds to begin an investigation for a new site, design and planning. Given that riders from all over the city often have to go downtown the change buses, this idea might turn out to have much merit.

Berta’s Briefings from Rep. Gardner: My New Facebook Page and Honoring Our Veterans

I just wanted to let you know that I just set up a Legislative Facebook page to give you updates on the latest legislative issues and community happenings. If you are using Facebook, I urge you to send me your comments and ideas at www.facebook.com/bertagardner. This is just one other way to communicate with me. I look forward to hearing from you!

Tomorrow we mark the solemn national holiday of Veterans Day to honor all those men and women who have served to protect our country. Many people of my generation have parents who served in World War II but there are not many who can say “My mama was a marine.” Also, when my dad served as a navigator in the South Pacific he was one of the youngest lieutenants in the US Air Force.

Berta’s Briefings from Rep. Gardner: What Should We Be Doing?

Whether a flood, earthquake or wildfire, a natural disaster could strike our community any time of the year. This September, communities around our state have been observing Emergency Preparedness Month. The purpose is to help make sure we are adequately prepared for an emergency or disaster in our community – and Alaska is no stranger to natural disasters.

In light of the enormous stakes at hand, what should we be doing to prepare now?
