2013 Constituent Survey
from Representative Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins
Alaska State House

In a perfect world, as your representative, I would know exactly how you feel on every issue all the time. That would be pretty cool -- and maybe a little creepy, too. But since I'm only human, a survey will have to do.

I sincerely believe that representation means listening before talking or acting or doing; your participation and thoughtful feedback is what empowers the democratic process -- which, incredibly, can actually work.

So just think of this as a sort of a civic version of the SAT. Except that there are no wrong answers!

Thanks so much for your time and consideration,

3 School vouchers allow parents to pay for private education (private or religious school) with public money. The Alaska Constitution expressly forbids public funds being paid to any ‘religious or other private educational institution.’ (Art. 7, Sec. 1) Do you support amending our constitution to allow school vouchers?

Yes
No

4 Alaska is one of the few states in the nation that does not offer universal (and voluntary) pre-kindergarten. Obviously pre-K is great and would help our kids; we should also consider that providing pre-K to an estimated 10,000 students would cost $44 million.

That considered, do you support or oppose universal (voluntary) pre-K?

 Support
 Oppose

5 Sometimes one can do a world of good just by being anti-dumb: eliminating infuriatingly backwards or outdated regulations, or addressing unintended consequences of laws. Like the (now repealed) Alaska Paperwork Reduction and Simplification Act, which, ironically, added text to bureaucratic paperwork to let the public know the (now lengthened) paperwork was compliant with the reduction measures.

Are you familiar with anything similar? We'd like to fix it. My staff and I actually read this; if something comes to mind, please provide as much detail as you can.

6 If you were Governor of Alaska for a day and could sign into law any bill you wanted (with the blessing of legislators, of course!), what would it be?

Comment:

7 Sometimes the best legislation subtracts -- not adds -- to the body of law. If you could eliminate any law, what would it be?

8 Based on what you may have written above, we'd like to be in touch. What's your email?
