Southeast Spotlight: Testify Today!

Today, the House Finance committee is holding public testimony regarding the state budget and funding priorities. It is unfortunate that they gave notice of the meeting so last-minute, but I hope that you will be able to participate.

What: PUBLIC TESTIMONY ON THE OPERATING BUDGET

Here are just a couple of the issues that concern me:

• Education: funding pre-K, the Base Student Allocation, and our University system – investing in education is investing in Alaska’s future.
• Medicaid expansion and reform: Through the budget we can expand Medicaid, accept $145 million in federal funds, and save $6.1 million in state spending.  The savings jump to roughly $40 million over the first 6 years.
• Alaska Marine Highway Service: I support the $7 million that Governor Walker proposed to add back. Ferries are vital to economy and transportation in coastal Alaska.
