Happy New Year!
Dear Neighbors,
The holiday season is much more than the morning dustings of snow, Christmas lights, scrumptious treats and holiday gatherings. It is a time of hope, joy and giving. Yet, the current state of our state economy and budget contribute to a sense of insecurity and anxiety.
The fiscal plan introduced by Governor Bill Walker to balance the state budget is a starting point that he admits “is written in pencil.” The Legislature must now tackle this huge task of passing a budget that cuts waste, but not opportunity or vital services. The low price and production of oil and a flawed oil tax system that gives too much away has caused a $3.5-billion budget deficit. Even if lawmakers cut half of all state employees, including all trooper and snow plow operators, the state would still face $2-billion budget deficit next year. Education, all Pre-K, the University and heating and energy assistance for seniors are slated to be cut. The outlook is bleak. But I’m also reminded that Alaska has survived through earthquakes, floods and other overwhelming challenges-and we were made better for it!
The session will convene on January 19 in Juneau. While many good lawmakers may disagree on some of the solutions being proposed, we can best overcome this problem by treating each other with respect and seeking common ground. This will be the top of my personal agenda.
The holiday season reminds us what is truly important – family, friends and community. This is also a time to reflect on the past year and look forward to a fresh start. 2015 certainly saw its share of ups and downs, but I am confident, working together, that better days are ahead for this great state!
Office Opening in Juneau
The office will be closed for the next week as lawmakers travel and transition to the office in the State Capitol. As always, I will continue to check email and phone messages. However, there may be a slight delay to respond until our computers are set up. Thank you for your patience.
More taxes? More cuts?
Your comments are very important to me. I would like to learn more about your priorities for the budget this year. Please check out my online survey and feel free to share with others too!
