Merry Christmas Neighbor!

This time of year in Fairbanks is beautiful, if cold. I hope the warmth of the season reaches you as you spend time with family and loved ones. The interim has gone by quickly and I have been busy preparing for the upcoming Legislative session in January. I’ve had the opportunity to meet with many of you who are doing great work for our community and I can’t wait to support these efforts down in Juneau.

Spread the Holiday Cheer!

During the holidays, it can be easy to get wrapped up in the stress of buying gifts, obligatory cooking and cleaning before family gatherings and the general commercialization of Christmas. One of my favorite holiday activities that cuts through all the noise to heart of Christmas, is volunteering. Many charities and nonprofits are in need of extra hands during the busy season. Volunteering and giving to others never fails to remind me how blessed I am. Check out one of these places to get in the Christmas spirit:

• The Salvation Army is in need of new unwrapped toys to help children who are less fortunate this Christmas season and for volunteer bell ringers to help raise funds for families in need. Contact: Major Tina Bottjen Phone: 452-3103 Email: tina.bottjen@usw.salvationarmy.org

• North Star Council on Aging needs volunteer Meals on Wheels drivers. Volunteers must be able to complete at least one 1.5- to 2-hour route, preferably from 9-11 a.m. Volunteers qualify for meals and fuel reimbursement and help bring smiles to homebound seniors with a meal. Contact: Laurie Phone: 452-1735.

• Fairbanks Counseling and Adoption’s Family Support services department would appreciate various types of gift cards for family fun and activities such as movie gift cards, restaurant, grocery or coffee hut snack gift cards. Contact: Susan Logue Phone: 456-4729 Email: slogue@fcaalaska.org

Wishing You Health, Wealth and Prosperity in the New Year!

In honor of the New Year, I am sending out my 2014 calendar card. If you would like to receive one, please email me your address and I will be happy to send one out to you. As always, I am grateful to serve the City of Fairbanks and wish everyone a joyful Christmas and Happy New Year!
