Town Hall Meeting Tomorrow and Governor's Fiscal Plan

Dear Neighbors,

Governor Walker signing the Interior Energy Project bill in July.

State Fiscal Plan Proposed

Governor Bill Walker will roll out his fiscal plan and an overview of the FY17 budget on Wednesday morning. This is historically early, but the times require that legislators and the Governor work closely and quickly to resolve these unprecedented challenges. A failure to do something this year could further harm our fragile economy and cause a much longer-lasting recession. Government must learn to live within its means and get to a steady state.

To that end, the fiscal plan includes:

1.      Continued drastic cuts to services, while prioritizing safety, health and education.
2.      Using a sovereign wealth fund model to better leverage existing savings.
3.      New broad-based taxes and fee increases.
4.      Oil and gas tax credit reforms.

Over the next several months, my colleagues and I will reach out and listen to Alaskans on the level of services and cuts that you would like to see made this year. My colleagues in the House Independent Democratic coalition will work hard to find a solution to the fiscal situation that we have today, so that we can have a brighter future tomorrow.
