Update and Happy Thanksgiving Wishes

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours! For any and all who want to stop by the Fairbanks Legislative Information Office, our doors are open 8:30am-5:00pm on weekdays through December 23. Please feel free to drop by, call or write me anytime with concerns, suggestions or ideas as we prepare for a historic year in Juneau.
While my Fairbanks office will be closed December 26 through January 6 for the transition to the Capitol office in Juneau, you can call or write me any time. You can also contact me on Facebook. My office in Juneau will be open for business on January 9, 2017. As we get closer to the start of session, I’ll be sure to update you about how to contact me.
Coming Up in the 30th Legislature
I am proud to announce my positions in the 30th Legislature to best serve the Fairbanks community and the state. I joined a bipartisan majority coalition made up of 17 Democrats, 3 Republicans and 2 Independents. The 30th Legislature will convene on January 17, 2017.

One of my positions in the new House Majority Coalition includes keeping a seat on the House Finance Committee. Due to the preceding majority’s failure to act on a comprehensive solution to the ongoing state fiscal crisis, the 30th Legislature’s House Majority will take on an enormous task: passing a comprehensive fiscal package that includes a combination of responsible budgeting, modest revenue increases and efficient use of savings that protects the Permanent Fund Dividend. I look forward to working with the incoming House Finance Committee Co-Chairs, Rep. Paul Seaton (R-Homer) and Rep. Neal Foster (D-Nome), along with the full Legislature to work out a bipartisan plan that is best for the state. We must act this year to protect our families, neighbors, and future generations.
Likewise, please join me in congratulating our own Senator Pete Kelly on becoming President of Alaska State Senate. It will be an honor to work together on a fiscal plan while keeping Fairbanks priorities at the top.
My new position in the upcoming majority includes co-chairing the Joint Armed Services Committee. Since World War II, Alaska is known to be the most strategic place in the world for the U.S. military. With F-35s coming to Eielson Air Force Base in 2020, the Long Range Defense Radar at Clear Air Force Station, and potential drawdowns of the U.S. Army in Alaska, it’s a crucial time for the military community in Alaska. I look forward to this opportunity to support the armed services in our state.

I’m grateful to be home for the holidays with my family. I hope this Thanksgiving holiday finds you safe! Please take a moment to consider those who have lost loved ones or do not have means for a fancy meal. I also encourage you to reach out to friends and neighbors in need throughout the year.
The Fairbanks Community Food Bank will provide Thanksgiving Food Boxes at the First Presbyterian Church at 547 7th Ave from 9am to 4pm on Wednesday, Nov. 23rd. Visit the Food Bank’s website for more information about how many items they need to serve 2,200 meals in the community.
The Food Bank is also tracking community meals on Thanksgiving Day. Below are the locations you can get a hot meal or volunteer.
• Stone Soup Cafe (507 Gaffney Rd): 7:30-10:30am meal, taking donations anytime
• Rescue Mission (723 27th Ave): Breakfast 9am-9:30am, Chapel 11am-12:30pm, Dinner 2pm-3pm
• Immaculate Conception Church (115 N. Cushman St): 11am - 1pm
• University Community Presbyterian Church (3510 College Rd): Breakfast 9:30am
• Unity Outreach Services Dinner at Chena Lakes Badger Road Church: 5pm - 9pm
• Bobby's Downtown & Stone Soup Cafe Dinner (609 2nd Ave): 1:30pm - 5pm
• Boys and Girls Club of the Tanana Valley (800 Cushman St) Hosting “Gaysgiving” for LGBTQ youth and community members who are unable to spend the holiday with their families: 3pm-7pm.
Holiday Bazaars at Pioneer Park
And of course, with Thanksgiving, the Holiday Season kicks off! There will be a number of holiday bazaars at Pioneer Park this weekend, including the final Fairbanks Arts Association Mini-Bazaar, from 12 Noon to 6pm on Saturday, November 26. Hope to see you there.
