Dear Neighbors,

Feel free to call me in Juneau for a daily update at 907.456.7423 |
The past 10 days of an extended and special session have been extremely productive as we negotiate a few items to get Governor Walker a balanced budget. Right now, the sticking points are Medicaid reform and expansion and a balanced budget with a commitment to education which I will speak to later. It is my hope that we can finish soon with our only Constitutional duty, to advance a budget.
Unfortunately, the legislature voted for a 12-day vacation late yesterday afternoon, essentially stalling any work on a budget solution. The republican majority members largely voted in bloc to go on a vacation while teachers are handed pink slips, child sexual abuse prevention legislation is stalled and Medicaid reform should still needs reviewed. It’s hard not to be a little cynical when lawmakers go on vacation, get paid to go to Juneau and have so much work yet to do. Please consider calling your representatives and tell them to get back to work!
I am very proud to be a member of the Independent Democratic Coalition of the Alaska State House. Our members have been steadfast supporters of a lasting commitment to public education, safer communities, affordable and accessible healthcare and opportunities for all Alaskans. We shall stay here in Juneau as long as it takes to get the job done!
Good News on Interior Energy

Press conference with Rep. Chris Tuck and Rep. Les Gara |
The legislature did make advances on the number one priority for the Interior Delegation and Governor Walker. We were able to pass House Bill 105 unanimously on the last day of session. The bill will reauthorize and repurpose the funds for the Interior Energy Project to find the best and most economical sources of natural gas across Alaska. Crews have already continued trenching and are preparing for a healthy season of construction to finally get natural gas to homes across Fairbanks and North Pole. I will continue to update you on the progress of the IEP and current construction that will impact neighborhoods across the city.

Although I’m still in Juneau, my astute and keen staff are back in Fairbanks ready to answer your inquiries! I am sad to say farewell to my Chief of Staff, Riley Leonard, who has worked in my office for the past three years. Riley will be heading to law school this fall and I wish him the very best. Amanda Frank began working in my office this session and will take over duties as Chief of Staff and Finance Committee aide. Feel free to contact her with any budget or legislative question!
Last but not least: House Finance
House Finance is scheduled to meet next week at the Anchorage Legislative Information Office. We are working on televising the meetings. Stay tuned!
