Dear Neighbor,

Protecting Wild Salmon

I grew up dipnetting at Chitina with my family every summer. We would make the 360-mile trek to experience nature, catch the ‘big one’ and fill our freezers. Fairbanks families rely on salmon to feed their families throughout the year. Alaska is the most sustainable and has the highest producing waters for wild salmon in the world. But a July 4th Dipnettingrecent government request by a large biotechnology company to build genetically modified salmon has come to my attention and has me concerned.

AquaBounty recently petitioned the federal government to produce hybrid Atlantic salmon by splicing genes from king salmon and ocean eels so they can grow large and survive in freezing temperatures. Rep. Bob Miller and I recently introduced a series of bills to halt corporations that will harm Alaskan seafood and diminish our own wild salmon. HB99, HB100 and HJR8 will ensure that genetically modified salmon are properly labeled if being sold anywhere in the state. I believe Alaskan consumers deserve to know that the food they purchase is modified.

HJR8 will be heard this Thursday in the House Fisheries Committee. It will send a strong message to the federal government that Alaskans do not want this type experimental food to be approved for consumption. If you would like to testify, contact my office at 456-7423.

Demanding Excellence in Education

The Governor recently submitted SB 43 to create a performance scholarship. The bill has received a positive reception among the Legislature and is moving through the committee process. I believe the bill does not go far enough to provide an opportunity for all students interested in college. If a student has the brains, the drive and a desire to pursue an education, money should not be the barrier. I believe firmly that a smart student who has the brains, passion to learn and desire to help themselves and their community should not be denied an education simply because they can’t afford one.

Giving through the PFD

http://www.kodiakmaritimemuseum.org/images/PickClickGivestateLOGO.gifTime is quickly approaching to the March 31 deadline to apply for the 2011 PFD. I would encourage families early and ensure that you obtain the necessary confirmation from the PFD office.

Join me by donating part of your dividend through “Pick, Click, Give” this year. This is the third year Alaskans can take the opportunity to support causes they care about by making a safe and secure donation when one files for a PFD. Pick, Click, Give; allows Alaskans to contribute to charities, non-profits, community foundations and university campuses that make a difference to Alaskans locally. Together we can celebrate the arts, lend a hand to those in need, and support our youth as they reach for success.

My office receives many calls throughout the year from disappointed Alaskans who forget to apply in time and denied a PFD. There is little any legislator can do under the law if you forget to file. Try the PFD office application online or go to the Fairbanks Legislative Information Office to file out a paper application today.

Meeting Constituent in Fairbanks

I will fly back home to host my first constituent meeting on February 26th. Topics of discussion include budget highlights and other issues that we are tackling in Juneau. The Legislature is contemplating decisions that will impact Alaska for years to come and your input is critical.

The meeting will be held at the Pioneer Hall in Pioneer Park on February 26th from noon until 2:00 PM. I will send out additional information on the constituent meeting in following E-news reports and I look forward to seeing you there.

Working Hard for Fairbanks Families,
