Should we legalize marijuana and raise the minimum wage?

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This Saturday the House and Senate Judiciary committees are discussing two ballot initiatives that will be voted on during the primary election on August 19th. The committees are also hosting a public comment session at the conclusion of the meeting.

If you wish to participate in the public testimony portion of the meeting, please go to your local Legislative Information Office (LIO). In Anchorage the LIO is located at 733 W 4th Ave. Let your voice be heard regarding either or both of these issues!

9am – 12pm:  An Act to Tax and Regulate the Production, Sale, and Use of Marijuana – This initiative seeks to legalize marijuana for adults 21 years of age and older as well as tax the sale of marijuana, among other regulatory actions.

1:30pm – 4:30pm:  An Act Increasing the Alaska Minimum Wage to $8.75 Per Hour -

Currently the minimum wage is $7.75 per hour; this initiative seeks to raise the minimum wage to $8.75 effective January 1, 2015 and again raise it to $9.75 effective January1, 2016, thereafter adjusting annually for inflation.

There will be another ballot initiative on this August’s primary election concerning the Pebble Mine. This initiative seeks to protect Bristol Bay wild salmon and waters by requiring legislative approval for large scale mine projects in the region.
