Updates on the Northern Access Road
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I have monitored the progress of the UMed/Northern Access Road project since it first received funding last year. This summer I watched the developers give many presentations at community councils throughout the area. In August, hundreds of our neighbors attended an Open House at East High School to submit comments and participate in discussions on the future of the road.

Listening at the Open House for the UMed/Northern Access Road project |
Last Friday, we learned which of the four potential routes had been selected. Tomorrow night (Tue, Feb 18th) there will be more discussion on this decision at an Open House at East High School. There will be an opportunity to ask questions as well as a short presentation.
The “orange route,” as it has come to be known, was selected by the developers. This is the most direct route connecting Elmore Dr. to Bragaw St. I still have definite apprehension about the project (due in large part to neighbors’ outcry in opposition), which is why Senator Gardner and I filed legislation to rescind the money dedicated to the project.

However, I was happy to read about the incorporation of roundabouts and bridges (although the roundabouts at the northern end give me pause). I was also glad to hear about the decision for a two lane road rather than four lanes (we all need to confirm the fact that it is 2 and not 4 lanes!). Both of these outcomes signify to me that the project developers are listening to the public and are willing to construct a road that, while opposed by most of my constituents, at least reflects some of their wishes.

A great turn out today at the “Save Our Schools” rally to support public education! |
We continue to deal with big issues here in Juneau. Today was a rally to “Save Our Schools” from teacher cuts and the use of public dollars for private and/or religious schools. Listen to the video from the rally here. This Saturday Anchorage legislators will be back in town for Anchorage Caucus (beginning at Loussac Library at 9:00 a.m.). This is an opportunity for community members to express concerns and ask questions of their representatives and senators. I hope to see you all there!

Mark your calendars for a constituent Town Hall March 1st at Steller Secondary School! |
The following weekend Senator Gardner and I will be back in Anchorage for a Town Hall meeting. We will be serving coffee and donuts (and some fruit) at Steller Secondary School and hope to see you all there with your questions and comments!
As always, please contact me any time if I can be of service to you or your family,
Sincerely,
