First Real Week of Session
Committee Meetings & Up Coming Events

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

The first real week of session is coming to a close and what an informative week it has been. Every legislator is assigned to various subcommittees to discuss department budgets. I have the privilege of sitting on four of these subcommittees: University, Law, Natural Resources, and Environmental Conservation. At these meetings we get an overview of their budgets and see how and where they spend their money. These subcommittees generally meet through the month of February before closing out and joining together to form the FY16 Operating Budget.

On top of those subcommittee meetings member of the legislature have their regular scheduled standing committee meetings. There are also a number of organizations and special interests that are constantly trying to meet with us—we try to accommodate everyone. It has been a busy week and it doesn’t look to slow until the end of session, but I will be sure to keep you all up-to-date on the issues.

*Corrections*

In my last newsletter I included an example of how large the $3.5 billion projected deficit really was. In the example I said, “If we were to completely cut out all the funding for the University of Alaska ($938 million), Medicaid ($693 million), and K-12 education ($1.3 billion) we would still have a budget deficit of $500 million”. The number for the University should have only included their Unrestricted General Funds (UGF) which is roughly $361 million. So, in actuality, if we cut those three programs we would still be left with over a $1 billion deficit.

As always, please call or email with any thoughts, ideas, or concerns.

I Answer to You!

Sincerely,
