Friends and Neighbors,
Those first few flakes the other day are a reminder of what is to come. Start uncovering the snow machines and break out the ski poles!
Due to ethics laws this is the last e-news you will be receiving from my office until after the election. We are still always available at our office, however we are advised not to send out mass mailings for the 30 days before an election. My website will continue to be updated with legislative news and events.
Recent Constituent Meetings
Senator Joe Thomas and I recently held constituent meetings around the district. We were very appreciative of those who took the time out of the last sunny days to talk to us about their issues. As we enter into campaign season please keep in mind that our legislative jobs do not end. If you missed one of our meetings you can always call, e-mail or visit my office. Your input is always welcome.

Senate Resources Meeting on Oil Spill Preparedness
Last week I attended a meeting with the Senate Resources committee to address concerns related to oil spill preparedness in Alaska. We heard from industry, community members, environmental experts and state agencies about where Alaska is in terms of spill preparedness. This meeting was the first step to ensure that the Gulf oil spill disaster never happens in Alaska and that any future spill is handled with expedience and professionalism.
I am concerned that the state is not prepared for another major oil spill. Alaskans cannot afford a disaster like the Gulf or Exxon ever again. Many of the groups and individuals in attendance offered a new perspective on the challenges and solutions related to protecting our state.

Genetically Engineered Salmon
Today I signed a letter urging the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration to disapprove a genetically engineered farmed salmon application. There are too many risks of a genetically engineered population mixing with wild Alaskan salmon. Many Alaskans depend on our wild salmon for food and income. More time needs to be dedicated to this topic to negate some of the risks of introducing genetically engineered salmon into wild populations.
Thank you for reading and please feel free to call my office and share your ideas.
