Upcoming Constituent Meeting

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Last evening the Second Session of the 29thAlaska Legislature came to a close without any significant action to address the ongoing fiscal crisis. The Legislature failed to pass the FY 2017 Operating Budget, putting thousands of state workers at risk of being laid off.

Last week the oil tax credit reform bill passed the House of Representatives, and I supported the bill in that form.  After it was passed to the Senate, the Majority gutted the bill to favor oil companies.  The House failed to concur, with the best interests of Alaskans in mind.

At one minute past midnight, the Governor called the legislature into a special session, which is set to begin May 23rd in Juneau.  The Alaska Independent Democratic Coalition will redouble our efforts during the special session with the goal to reach a compromise on the budget gap, and maintain a functioning state government in order to avoid a harmful recession.

It is important that we pass significant and meaningful reform to the unsustainable subsidies given to the oil industry in the form of tax credits and incentives, so that the state can afford education and health services, rather than cut them in order to favor big oil companies.

I support Governor Walker’s decision to call an immediate special session with a limited agenda focused on the budget, oil tax credit reform, new revenue measures, and a small handful of important bills.  Click here to view the Governor’s proclamation.
