May 9th, 2012

Friends and Neighbors,

The 27th Alaska State Legislature is finally over. Marilyn, Lily the Great Pyrenees and I have returned home to Fairbanks. We are taking advantage of this good weather and trying to get our garden ready.

I am working on a print newsletter that should be ready soon, to give you a look at what happened this year in Juneau. Please be on the lookout for that and important information on upcoming constituent meetings.

As always, please feel free to contact my office at 456-8172 or e-mail me at rep.david.guttenberg@legis.state.ak.us .

Insurance Coverage for Children

One small victory, that has a tremendous impact, was a last minute amendment to HB 218 “Prescription Drug Specialty Tiers” to include a reinsurance program for child only health care coverage in Alaska. This will allow insurance companies to offer child only plans again without the increases in premiums or risks associated with insuring all children.

I sponsored legislation, HB 326 “Child Only Health Care Coverage”, that would have required an insurer in the individual market to offer a child only plan. Currently those who do not qualify for Denali Kid Care and do not have access to a family health insurance plan, such as grandparents raising grandchildren, cannot purchase coverage for their healthy children.

This new amendment was a very acceptable solution to the problem and I am pleased we could all come together to do something that will help Alaskan families.

The Moving Wall Coming to Fairbanks

The dates have been finalized for the veterans moving wall in Fairbanks. The wall will be here June 1st through June 6th. I will be reading names to honor our fallen and all those who served. For more information or to sign up to read names please contact Mark Lomax: 328-9196 or mlomax@akeela.org or UAF Veterans Advocate Phil Hokenson at pchokenson@alaska.edu .

Redistricting Update

The Alaska Redistricting Board and the plaintiffs in the continuing court case will present oral arguments on May 10th at 10am before the Alaska Supreme Court. This will be the second appeal to the Alaska Supreme Court and hopefully these final arguments will allow Alaskans to know what district they will be in until the next census.

You can visit the Alaska Redistricting Boards website for more information or tune into Gavel to Gavel to see if the arguments are being aired.

Stay in Touch

Even though the regular session is over, our Interior Delegation will eventually be home in Fairbanks so please feel free to set up time to talk about issues. While in Juneau, our time is often limited, meeting with us over the Interim allows us to spend more time understanding issues and preparing legislation. We want to hear from you!

Senator Thomas and I will be hosting numerous constituent meetings around the district and mailing out our end of session newsletter. Keep an eye out for upcoming announcements.

Thank you for reading and please feel free to call my office and share your ideas.
