School Gardens House Education Hearing Update

HB 93 "School Gardens, Greenhouses, and Farms" was heard this week in the House Education Committee. I was very impressed by the testimony presented from teachers, students and non-profits. Thank you! The bill will be heard again in House Education on Friday February 25th. We have been working on a committee substitute to address members concerns as to funding. The new substitute will hopefully include a provision that allows the program to have a ramp up period. In the first year the grants will be limited to ten schools and then 5 additional schools each year after.

While this bill has a lot of support, committee members had concerns about the amount of funding it would take if all the schools in the state decided to apply in the first year.  I believe that putting a ramp up progression on the grant program only ensures the program is sustainable and further creates "buy in" from all parties.

Following the Legislative Session

There are many ways to follow what is going on here in Juneau from home. The Legislature has two live TV programs dedicated to covering the happenings. You can view live streaming committee hearings through http://alaskalegislature.tv/ . The 360 North TV channel runs a program called Gavel to Gavel which shows committee meetings, floor sessions and presentations in the building. The Gavel to Gavel website has been upgraded to include an online archival system so that you can past meetings anytime.

Many people are interested in following specific pieces of legislation. BASIS is the online system to track legislation, find out who is on what committee and when meetings will occur.

Knowing what is going on can be easy to do! I encourage you to take a look at all of these resources. If you have questions about these or need help please let my office know.

Become a Mentor for Youth in Fairbanks

Earlier this month the State of Alaska awarded a grant to Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) to launch a mentoring program for older foster youth.  In collaboration with Covenant House, BBBS is seeking adult mentors to work with foster youth throughout the state.  These youth are often without a stable adult connection in their life, and a mentor can provide the guidance and support young people need as they transition to independence.  The Fairbanks office needs your help!  Are you interested in making a big difference in a young person's life?  If so, please call Adrian Kohrt at 452-8110 for more details.
