The Opening of the 2016 Legislative Session

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Yesterday the 2016 legislative session gaveled in, to what many are calling a historic year for Alaskan politics.  With a 3.5 billion dollar deficit challenge ahead of the legislature, we have a lot to consider so that our state can continue thrive and so that all Alaskans are healthy, prosperous and safe in their homes and communities.

It is a priority of mine that all children have access to quality public education from pre-K to post-secondary levels, as well as affordable and exceptional health care.  Recently, Alaskans have seen increasing premiums and out of pocket costs in the insurance marketplace.  This session I will be introducing a single payer system to combat the rising costs of health care.

It is important that we wisely and sustainably manage all of our state’s natural wealth, including minerals, fish and game, as well as oil and gas.  Maintaining the permanent fund so that future Alaskans may share in the benefits of our natural resources has proven to be a successful component to our economy over the years.

Before we take away the PFD or cut the budget, the legislature needs to seriously consider how we give tax credits to oil companies.  I believe there needs to be more transparency in the system.  Alaskans are entitled to information surrounding payments, which are currently secret because of confidential tax information.  We should know how the credits are used for projects, and if they benefit the state.

I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead this legislative session, and as always, welcome any feedback so that I can better represent you!
