ANCHORAGE - Senate Democratic Leader Johnny Ellis (D-Anchorage) said today that he will follow the lead of presidential candidates President George W. Bush and Senator John Kerry in responding to the issues and concerns addressed in Smackdown Your Vote!®'s national voter issues paper for 18-to-30-year-old Americans.
On Monday, June 21, 2004, World Wrestling Entertainment® (WWE) released responses from President Bush and Senator Kerry to the issues and concerns in the national 18-30 VIP that was developed by WWE® in partnership with the League of Women Voters, the Harvard Institute of Politics, MTV's Choose or Lose, New Voters Project, Youth Vote Coalition, 18 to 35, Rock The Vote and Declare Yourself. The University of Virginia's Center of Politics and the Close Up Foundation have also endorsed the VIP.
"The young voters of this country have a right to know how their elected officials and candidates for public office stand on the issues that are of importance to them," said Senator Ellis. "As the co-chair for Smackdown Your Vote!'s YES for Democracy network in Alaska, I am going to respond to the issues raised in the VIP, and I urge all my legislative colleagues on both sides of the aisle to do the same. We need to let 18-to-30-year-old Americans know that their issues are important to us and that they will be represented by their government. We hope by responding to these group of Americans, they will vote in greater numbers on Election Day 2004."
In February 2003, Smackdown Your Vote! announced the formation of a national state initiative - Youth Empowerment Strategy (YES) for Democracy, a bi-partisan initiative of state legislators from 25 states to encourage the next generation to get involved in the political process at the state level and to support Smackdown Your Vote!'s objective of getting two million more 18-to-30-year-olds to vote in 2004 than voted in 2000, an increase of 10 percent.
YES for Democracy's national co-chairs are Minnesota State Representative Tony Sertich (DFL), Florida State Senator David Aronberg (D), and Ohio State Representative Geoffrey Smith (R). Senator Ellis is the YES for Democracy co-chair in Alaska.
