Consumer Protection Against Mad Cow Disease JUNEAU – House Joint Resolution 35 by Representative Beth Kerttula (D-Juneau) passed the House of Representatives today with unanimous support. The measure calls for labeling of meat and supports efforts by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to prevent mad cow disease in American beef. "Americans deserve to know what is in their food and where it comes from," said Representative Kerttula. "Country of origin labeling is an important tool in protecting the American people from eating dangerously diseased meat. People deserve to have a safe food supply. Labeling gives consumers the information they need to make informed decisions in the market place." Kerttula continued: "I mean, who wants to eat horrible Holsteins?" HJR35 moves now to the Senate for consideration. ###
