Wild vs. Farmed Salmon JUNEAU – The Alaska State Senate this morning unanimously passed House Joint Resolution 32, a resolution by Representative Beth Kerttula (D-Juneau). After a small revision in the Senate, the resolution heads back to the House for concurrence. HJR32 has already garnered unanimous support in the House. HJR32 supports the timely labeling of fish and fishery food products in the market place to identify the country of origin and presence of coloring and other additives, to indicate whether there has been modification, and to distinguish between wild and farmed fish. "As Alaskans, we know that wild fish is superior to farmed fish, both in taste and nutritional value," said Representative Kerttula. "We also know that farmed fish poses serious health risks because of the manner in which they are raised. Other Americans have recently become more aware of this. However, it can be difficult to tell whether the fish you are buying in a grocery store is farm raised or wild caught. "Labeling fish would provide consumers with the information they need to make healthy choices when buying fish in the marketplace. House Joint Resolution 32 supports efforts to clearly label fish as wild or farmed and to include a country of origin." ###
