ANCHORAGE - Alaska House Democratic Leader Ethan Berkowitz (D-Anchorage) today sent a letter to U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge seeking clarification regarding a proposal by Governor Frank Murkowski to purchase a jet with Homeland Security funds.

The letter reads, in part:
"A proposal has been made to purchase a passenger jet with Homeland Security funds, ostensibly to transport prisoners, assist in fish and wildlife enforcement, serve as a deployment option for peace officers, and provide the governor with air transportation. The proposal would entail at least $2 million of the state's $19 million in Homeland Security funds... We request clarification as to whether such uses are consistent with Homeland Security purposes."

In the letter, Representative Berkowitz thanks Secretary Ridge for his efforts on behalf of our nation's security and for the funds that have been made available for Homeland Security purposes.
