Additional information: SJR17 Olson JUNEAU – Senate Joint Resolution 17, supporting a continuation of cooperative governmental relations with the Yukon Territory, passed the Alaska Senate this week with a vote of 18-0. Introduced by Senator Donny Olson (D-Nome), the resolution requests an extension of the Alaska-Yukon Intergovernmental Relations Accord, which is set to expire on September 8 of this year. “Recently, I attended the annual legislative exchange with our Yukon colleagues in Whitehorse. The meetings and discussions that ensued underscore the importance of working together on resource management and development projects of mutual concern,” said Sen. Olson. Olson observed that Alaska provides important transportation conduits for the Yukon’s commerce and resource development. The two governments co-manage important fish and game resources that trans-migrate our boundaries. And in the event of a gas line project down the Alcan Highway, “the accord will provide a critical linkage for the success of the project,” he said. The resolution also supports continuation of interchanges between the two governments' legislatives bodies. ### | |
