Dear Friend: I'm pleased to announce that my bill to ban anabolic steroids in Alaska is moving forward. Currently, Alaska law permits the possession and use of anabolic steroids, which are banned by state law in every other state but Vermont. The provisions of my SB 49 (Sponsor Statement), which will close the loophole in Alaska criminal law, were incorporated into SB 70. The Senate Health and Social Services Committee, chaired by Sen. Fred Dyson, R-Eagle River, amended the bill, which originally focused solely on methamphetamines. Anabolic steroids pose a danger to the health of both young and adult users. Widely used by bodybuilders and other athletes who believe they give them a competitive edge and improve performance, anabolic steroids can have a variety of negative side effects, including high blood cholesterol levels, sexual and reproductive disorders, and severe acne. Possible psychological disturbances include mood swings, depression, extreme irritability, hostility, and aggression. I am gratified that Senator Dyson and his committee have seen fit to include my legislation in SB 70, which offers other protections to Alaskans. Making anabolic steroids illegal will send a strong message to Alaska’s young people. I am happy to see this moving through the legislature. As always, I am very interested in hearing from you.
