Elton's Bill to Streamline the Initiative
Process in State Affairs

Senate Bill 39, sponsored by Senator Kim Elton (D-Juneau), will create a committee to ensure ballot language for initiatives, referenda, and constitutional amendments is fair and unbiased. It will also set deadlines so the ballot language is written well in advance of when the state needs to print the ballots.

The bill states that the lieutenant governor shall appoint five individuals to the ballot proposition committee, including two proponents of the initiative (at least one of whom must be a member of the initiative committee); two opponents of the initiative; and one individual from a list of three submitted by the chief justice of the Alaska Supreme Court.

Senate Bill 39 is scheduled for a hearing in Senate State Affairs on Tuesday, February 22nd at 3:30 pm.
