From the Desk of e-mail: Senator_Johnny_Ellis@legis.state.ak.us Honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice Dear Friends and Neighbors, Earlier this month, Representative Berta Gardner and I visited the Vietnam War Memorial Moving Wall in Eagle River. During our break between special legislative sessions, we wanted to take time to pay tribute to the men and women who gave their lives for their country. As I looked over the names of those who did not return from Vietnam and thought of my father who did return from Vietnam; I was reminded of the solemn promise we make to the servicemen and women who do return. In addition to our respect and gratitude, we owe them the support they need to carry on as productive citizens. They deserve nothing less. In addition to the resolution bringing the Moving Wall to Alaska , here are some other veteran-related bills that passed the legislature this session: Representative Beth Kerttula of Juneau sponsored a resolution (HJR25) to extend the Veterans Homeownership Program, which makes low-interest home loans available to veterans who served before 1977 and who apply within 30 years of leaving active military duty. I voted YES on this bill, and at this time, it is awaiting the Governor’s signature. The Legislature also appropriated $500,000 for the Military Youth Academy. This money will be used to build a new facility for the Academy in the Interior. I was happy to support the next generation of servicemen and women with these funds. Veterans’ Wheelchair Games Coming Soon! Finally, back in 2003, I sponsored a joint resolution requesting the 26th National Veterans Wheelchair Games be held in my home city of Anchorage . Today, I’m proud to report that from the 2nd to the 8th of July, over 500 Veteran athletes will come to Anchorage from all over the United States to participate in this great event. I hope you and your family will have the opportunity to attend or participate in the games. This summer was officially named “The Summer of Honor and the Season of Gratitude” by the Legislature. I hope you all take a moment this summer to remember the veterans who have given so much for our country. Best Regards, Senator Johnny Ellis P.S. As always, it is my honor and privilege to serve you. Let's keep in touch! |
