Keeping in Touch While in Juneau Happy New Year! I hope your new year if off to a good start. We’ve been in Juneau for a couple of weeks now and things are already getting busy. The second session of a legislature is always busier since bills from last year are already somewhere in the process. I’m looking forward to the work that lies ahead. We’re lucky to have a budget surplus again this year and I hope we act responsibly when considering spending proposals. My personal position is that we should save at least half of the surplus. Other big issues this year include better schools for our children and adequate funding for education, including k-12, university and vocational training, good jobs for Alaskans (jobs that include health insurance), public safety and strengthening our state economy by getting the state’s fiscal house in order. I will continue to focus on transportation and neighborhood quality of life issues that directly affect you and your families. I hope the Anchorage Caucus will come together in support of funding for major transportation improvements in Anchorage. I plan to keep in touch this session through community council meetings and mid-session constituent meetings, but I also need you to keep me informed of events and concerns back home. Please let me know as soon as something comes up and I’ll do my best to help out in whatever way I can. To do this, I invite you to use one of the many options available. I can be contacted via: e-mail, web-site, mail, or a simple phone call. You can track legislation and committee hearings through BASIS, a legislative tracking system located on the Legislature’s home page (http://www.legis.state.ak.us).
