Dear Friends and Neighbors,

With Leah Boltz at the ribbon-cutting for the Park Playground for All at the Cuddy Family Midtown Park

What an amazing summer we have been having! A lot of great things have been happening in Midtown and Spenard and I hope you have had a chance to get out and enjoy everything Alaska has to offer in the summer. Please remember that my door is always open and I’ve love to hear from you about things going on in our community.

I celebrated Ted Stevens Day at the opening of the Cuddy Midtown Playground for All. The playground is the result of the efforts of one tenacious mom, Leah Boltz, who wanted her amazing wheelchair-bound daughter, Anna, to simply be able to play with her friends at the park. The community rallied together and we now have a fantastic play space for all children.

We also have our very first fenced dog park right in the heart of Spenard. It’s on Arctic Blvd. between W 31st and 32nd Aves. Dozens of volunteers showed up last Saturday for a Park Fix It. I am thrilled that dog owners now have a safe and spiffed-up space in which to exercise their dogs, in a park that the neighborhood can be proud of.

This summer has also given me the opportunity to learn more about important issues the legislature will be looking at next session.

The House Finance Subcommittee on Education met last week to get a better understanding of the academic standards we expect our students to meet. Education is going to be one of my top priorities in the upcoming session and I think there are a lot of ways we can strengthen our commitment to students across the state.

I also traveled to Nome for a Community and Regional Affairs meeting focused on mining impacts and bulk fuel issues in this historic regional hub city.

As summer winds down, I will be researching legislation I plan on introducing next session. And I want to hear from you. Please email, call, or just stop by my office to talk about what matters to you!
