Busy, Busy, Busy.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Several reams of paper covering all thebills for Saturday’s Floor Session.
Several reams of paper covering all the bills for Saturday’s Floor Session.

We’re in the last 36 hours of session and things are rapidly coming to a head here in the Capitol. Bills are being quickly rushed to the floor. Just this morning they scheduled a last minute meeting of Community and Regional Affairs, a committee that had previously adjourned for the rest of session, in order to get a bill on the House Floor today.

The bill in question is a good one: it provides property tax exemptions for the widow or widower of a person killed while performing military service. I tried to make an amendment the bill to include same-sex military couples, but unfortunately it did not pass.

I’m hopeful that the courts will soon make permanent changes to give all people equal right, regardless of sexual orientation.

Oil.

The bill on the floor today with huge impacts for all Alaskans is SB21, the Governor’s bill to massively reduce the revenues Alaska receives from oil.

We’re going to be making a choice between committing $1billion dollars a year to a 10-15 year project with absolutely no promise from the oil companies that we’ll get anything in return for our sacrifice, or investing that money in our children, our communities, our infrastructure, our future.

In 10-15 years many of Alaska’s children will be in college or the workplace. Think about how bright their futures could be if we were to invest that $1billion a year in their education instead of pushing it across the table to multi-national corporations.

Unfortunately, I’m afraid the bill is going to pass but I will continue to work hard to make sure both oil companies and the legislators voting for this bill are held accountable to our children and this State for the actions they are taking now. This bill is bad for Alaska, plain and simple.

Thank you,

Harriet Drummond[signed]
