It's the Right Thing to Do
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Today the Republican associated firm Dittman Research released a poll that makes one thing very clear: Alaskans demand Medicaid expansion.
The poll very plainly reveals that 60% of Alaskan residents are eager for the legislature to do the right thing and provide Alaska’s working poor with medical coverage.
Why would the Legislature be hesitant to help those who need it the most? Probably because of the pervasive number of myths that surround the reform and expansion effort.
Multiple research reports show that Medicaid expansion would achieve the following:
• Cut in half the number of uninsured Alaskans;
• More Alaskans would get preventative and primary care, as well as help in managing costly chronic diseases;
• Small business owners would benefit because of less turnover and fewer lost work days due to employees with unattended illnesses and injuries;
• Generate 4,000 jobs in Alaska;
• Bring more than a billion new federal dollars into the Alaska economy over the first 5 years; and
• Dramatic reduction in the levels of uncompensated care provided by hospitals. These costs are passed along to everyone through higher hospital charges. In essence, Alaskan’s are already paying for those who aren’t covered.
Opponents worry that that the initial 100% federal reimbursement, moving over 5 years to 90% reimbursement, might be discontinued. However, it has been established that the state can accept the expansion on condition that federal funding is maintained.
There is currently no credible reason to not accept Medicaid expansion.
It’s the right thing to do.
Thank you,
