Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Elstun, Harriet, and Senator Mark Begich |
This week the capital city received a visit from the esteemed Senator Mark Begich, who came to speak before the Tongass Democrats as well as the entire Legislature during a Joint House and Senate Session. Among other topics he stressed the need for the State to make a commitment to fund our PUBLIC schools, recounting some of the wonderful educational experiences he had in the Anchorage School District.
I’ve finally gotten through the last of the surveys that you sent back to me, and I just want to say that I have some of the most articulate and intelligent neighbors in all of Anchorage. Your stance on school vouchers is clear: over 80% of you strongly oppose spending public money on religious and private schools. Keep those surveys coming. If you’ve misplaced your paper survey, go to www.alaskasenatedems.com/survey/HD16.php and fill it out online.
I also want to take a moment to draw attention to the Z.J. Loussac Library Generational Renewal. A capital request has been put forward by the Mayor that would include funds to renovate parts of the current library facility.
A year in the making, the Loussac Library Facility Master Plan is a result of detailed planning by a team of architects, designers, technology and library experts, and thoughtful and creative input from thousands of community members. The recently completed plan sets a vision for a renovated Z. J. Loussac library that is a dynamic and interactive hub for community engagement.

If the funding is received (funding that has my full support), it will pay for an expanded ground level lobby and a safer and more welcoming entrance. I’m sure those of you who frequent the library can imagine how much more accessible the library would be without those treacherous steps leading up to the main entrance.
A new elevator would be added to the ground floor that will reach all four levels rather than forcing people to exit and move to a different elevator.
I hope you’ll join me in publicly voicing your support for this project.
Thank you,
![Harriet [signed] Harriet Drummond[signed]](../../drummond/sig.jpg)
