Dear Friends and Neighbors,

It’s a small office, but we make it work.

Session is in full swing and we have started to delve into important issues here in Juneau. The main topics of conversation revolve around the gas line and marijuana regulation.

I’ve got a couple new bills I’m working on that you may have read about in the news.

The first is a bill that would allow terminally ill patients to ease their suffering and hasten an inevitable and certain death. House bill 99 preserves a person’s right to live, and die, on their own terms according to their own desires and beliefs.

The bill is modeled on legislation from Oregon that has been on the books for 20 years now. A lot of time has been spent making sure that it cannot be abused, and that individuals cannot be coerced in any way.

I’ve gotten overwhelmingly positive responses from my constituents about this bill, and I’m truly touched by the support I’ve received. If you have question about the bill, I strongly encourage you to read it for yourself.

I’ve also introduced a bill that would make it so legislators wouldn't receive per diem for time they're away from Juneau during regular or special sessions. Currently, legislators get per diem for all 90 days of session, even when they leave the capital city for any reason.  I feel that if a legislator is sleeping in his or her own bed, they shouldn’t be getting paid per diem for being in Juneau.
I’m not out to prevent anyone from going home for the weekend to visit their families, but in this fiscal climate we’re all going to have to tighten our belts.
