Happy Valentines Day!

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Rep. Drummond, Astrid Williams and Pat Higgins from the Anchorage School Board.
Rep. Drummond, Astrid Williams and Pat Higgins from the Anchorage School Board.

Next week, the Education Session really heats up! People from across the state are working on ways to make their voices heard.  It was just announced that House Joint Resolution 1 (HJR1), the bill that would allow for the amending of the Alaska Constitution to provide public funds for private and religious schools, will be heard in the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, February 9th, at 1:00pm

If you’re a defender of a robust public education system, please call in to testify, write letters to the editor, and contact your legislator and let them know how you feel.

In Juneau this Monday, I will proudly stand beside parents, teachers and students as we gather to send a clear message that our public schools must be made a priority this session. If you happen to be in our Capital city, please plan on stopping by!

 Spotlight on Alaskan Public Education

Gov. Bill Egan

Let’s take a moment to focus on political figures that went to public school here in Alaska this week.

William A. Egan, First Governor of Alaska

Bill Egan grew up in Valdez, Alaska and graduated as valedictorian from Valdez High School in 1932. He served as Governor from January 3, 1959 to 1966, and then again from 1970 to 1974 and is the only governor in the state’s history to have been born in Alaska.

But that doesn’t mean other legislators haven’t benefited from the outstanding public schools in the state. Here is just a partial list of Alaska Legislators who graduated from public high schools around the state:

Governor Sean Parnell – East Anchorage High School, Class of 1980

US Senator Mark Begich – Steller Secondary School, Class of 1981

Senator Johnny Ellis – Bartlett High School, Class of 1978

Senator Lesil McGuire – Dimond High School, Class of 1988

Representative Charisse Millett – Dimond High School, Class of 1981

Representative Bill Stoltze – Chugiak High School, Class of 1979

Representative Cathy Munoz – Juneau Douglas High School, Class of 1982

Representative Lindsey Holmes – Steller Secondary School, Class of 1991

Representative Lora Reinbold – Anchorage East High School, Class of 1982

Thank you,
