Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Rep. Drummond, Rep. Tarr, and Rep. Kerttula.
Rep. Drummond, Rep. Tarr, and Rep. Kerttula.

In what is perhaps becoming routine, session started with a bang for the House Democrats this year. We gaveled in this past Tuesday and the first big announcement of the year came from our Minority Leader, Beth Kerttula.

Rep. Kerttula announced her resignation to pursue a fellowship at Stanford University.

Beth has represented Juneau for 16 years and served as House Minority Leader for the past eight. I am deeply honored to have worked with Beth and will miss her leadership and her friendship. I wish her the best.

This week we have also seen staggering education cuts across the state as school districts unveil their budget for FY14-15. As the Democratic member on the House Education committee, I am disturbed by the lack of adequate funding the state has continued to provide year after year.

While I agree that the government should not spend unwisely, I strongly believe that public education is essential and I will continue to make it my top priority. Every child in Alaska is guaranteed access to good public education, and I believe we need to increase funding, not continue the flat funding model that has plagued our schools for the last four years.

The Anchorage Daily News has published some good articles on the cuts and the problem with flat funding that can be read here and here.

You can also read a recent ADN Compass piece written by myself and Representative Les Gara.

Thank you,

Harriet Drummond[signed]
