A Fair Share for Alaskans
The special session to address the broken PPT oil tax begins in less than two weeks on October 18th. Yesterday, the Governor released a draft of her bill, which adjusts the PPT to a higher rate and restricts some of the oil companies’ deductions. I am concerned that this attempt to “fix” the PPT won’t get the job done in guaranteeing Alaskans a fair share for our resources.
I believe that the best way get a fair share for Alaskans is to create a transparent, verifiable system that taxes based on the gross value of our oil, not on what Exxon tells us its profits are. I have been working with my colleagues to introduce our own proposal that will accomplish that goal.
Please join me and other Anchorage Legislators for a community meeting on oil taxes and the upcoming special session this Saturday at East High School. There will be plenty of good food available, and the atmosphere will be conducive to positive, energetic discussion. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas on how we can do our best to make sure Alaskans get a fair share for our oil.
