Protecting Your Rights: Serving Sand Lake, Spenard, and Turnagain
November 11, 2015

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Veterans Day is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany in 1918. "The eleventh month on the eleventh day at the eleventh hour." Today, we celebrate, honor, and thank our veterans for their service to the United States. In Alaska, we have over 70,000 veterans who have dedicated their lives to protecting and serving our country. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Veteran's Day flags

In my family, we have a custom of saying the names of those who have served our country with honor. On this Veteran's Day, I remember William Clark, who fought with the Marines in the Battle of Iwo Jima and died last month. Bill was 94, and he was a model of graciousness, honor, and caring. After the war, he married Polly and they raised three children. My brother had the good fortune to marry their daughter. Bill always had a positive outlook on the challenges that we face each day and every day. With the perspective that came from having lost so many of his comrades on Iwo Jima, Bill understood that each day well-lived is a blessing. William Clark served our country with distinction, and we remember him.

As always, please let us know if you have suggestions or concerns.

Sincerely,

signed: Matt Claman
