Dear Friends and Neighbors,

On Labor Day, we pay tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. This weekend, we remember the history of the labor movement and celebrate the strength and diversity of our nation’s workers.

A Brief History of Labor Day

Labor Day originated amid nationwide economic depression and labor unrest in the United States. In the late 1800s, at the height of the Industrial Revolution, American workers faced long hours, small wages, and dismal working conditions. During this time, labor unions became more vocal and began organizing strikes and rallies to protest the poor conditions and urge employers to renegotiate hours and pay. On September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers in New York City took time off to march from City Hall to Union Square, holding the first Labor Day parade. The idea of a workers holiday caught on, and many states passed legislation recognizing it. Twelve years later, in 1894, Congress passed an act designating a federal holiday on the first Monday in September: Labor Day.

First Friday at the Museum

Recurring monthly. Friday, September 2nd – Friday, December 2nd, 6-9pm at the Anchorage Museum.
Enjoy free general admission to the galleries, battle of the breweries in Muse restaurant, and special activities including live music and a live astronomy show in the planetarium. Click here for more information.

Killer Dueling Pianos

Friday, September 2nd – Sunday, September, 4th, 7pm at Chilkoot Charlie’s.

The Killer Dueling Pianos is doing three shows at Chilkoot Charlie’s this weekend. Featuring pianists Liz Fohl and Ryan Bueter playing songs from all genres and decades. Click here for more information.

Moose Madness

Saturday, September 3rd, 12-4pm at the Alaska Zoo.

The Alaska Zoo will have hands-on moose and deer-related critter items, a moose facts scavenger hunt, crafts and coloring sheets at story time, deer family enrichment, and more. It’s a great event for families. Click here for more information.

Safety Tips for the Holiday Weekend

Many people use Labor Day weekend as their last chance to travel, go to the lake, and fire up the grill. While you’re celebrating the end of summer, please keep the following safety tips in mind:

Driving

•        Buckle up, observe speed limits, and drive slowly through construction areas
•        Eliminate distracted driving activities, including texting
•        Watch out for other drivers

Water Activities

•        Have Personal Flotation Devices available for everyone on-board
•        Never go boating or swimming alone
•        Provide constant supervision to children in or near the water

Grilling

•        Keep a safe distance from houses, tree branches, or anything flammable
•        Keep children and pets away from the grill
•        Keep a spray water bottle or fire extinguisher nearby for flare-ups
