Dear Friends and Neighbors, On Monday, we celebrate Independence Day, a great day in our nation’s history. Below, I’ve listed a number of events you and your family can enjoy this holiday weekend. Judge Rules House Majority Can’t Take Over Medicaid Lawsuit Last month, the House Majority filed an appeal in the Alaska Supreme Court to overturn the Superior Court decision that authorized the Governor’s Medicaid expansion decision. The House Majority’s action in filing notice of the appeal contradicts the advice of the Legislature’s Legal Services Director, Doug Gardener. According to Mr. Gardner, the decision to appeal Judge Pfiffner’s decision requires a full House and Senate vote. But the House Majority did not allow the full House to vote on whether to appeal Judge Pfiffner’s decision. Judge Pfiffner has already rejected the Legislative Council’s arguments two times and the Alaska Supreme Court has rejected an earlier request for review. On Friday, Pfiffner said there was no evidence that the case had been transferred from the Legislative Council to the House and the House lacked authority to appeal the decision. The legislature has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars pursuing a lawsuit that attempts to take federally-funded, affordable health care away from 40,000 low-income Alaskans. I have never supported this costly lawsuit and I will continue to support efforts to end the appeal of Judge Pfiffner’s decision.
