Friday the 13th is
supposed to be unlucky, but for me it was a red letter day. Two
of my bills were given hearings. My only difficulty was
in having to be in two places at the same time. While
my gang bill was being heard in House Finance, my Internet
hunting bill was being heard in Judiciary. My staff was
stationed in both committees on their cell phones, while I
ran back and forth giving testimony. See below
for more details!
BOB'S
BILLS
Ganging up on Gangs
HB 133, my bill to require
electronic monitoring for convicted gang members received a
hearing on Friday in the House Finance Committee. The
bill is being supported by the Anchorage, Kenai and Fairbanks
Police Departments, the Anchorage School District and the Anchorage
Municipality. A final hearing on the bill is scheduled for
Tuesday; I'll keep you posted on the bill's progress.
Clicky Clicky Bang
Bang?
Not in Alaska!
HB 220,. my bill to ban
internet hunting has been moving through the House faster than
a charging grizzly. Within a week of being introduced
it was given a hearing in House Resources where it was passed
out of committee in record time after members heard from such
divergent groups as the Alaska Outdoor Council, the Professional
Hunters Association and the Humane Society. Today it
had a hearing in House Judiciary Committee where it was also
approved in one sitting. The next stop is House Finance.
Omnibus means Ethics
Plus
HB 10, the bipartisan
ethics bill I introduced with six other Anchorage legislators
hitched a ride, if you will, on the ethics omnibus that passed
the House last week.
Among other things, the
bill makes bribery of public officials illegal in Alaska and
prevents legislators from taking outside pay for work they
were elected to do. I was proud to join my Democratic
and Republican colleagues in voting yes for this important
and long-overdue piece of legislation.
